Spartanburg, South Carolina РJames Vernon Atkinson, Jr., 78, of Spartanburg, SC, died on Saturday December 11, 2021. Born April 22, 1943 in Bennettsville, SC, he was the son of the late James Vernon Atkinson, Sr and Ir̬ne Newton Atkinson.
Vernon was a graduate of Dreher High School and the University of South Carolina at Columbia. A veteran of the United States Navy, Mr. Atkinson was the founder of Summit Engineering Co.
A member of the Second Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder, he served on various committees, including the Budget and Building & Grounds. He has also served on the board of directors of The Haven and volunteered at the soup kitchen and was a member of the SC Society of Professional Engineers.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 44, Velma Roddy Atkinson, sons, Warren R. Atkinson (Reynolds) of Inman, SC and James Paul Atkinson of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, three grandchildren, Molly Atkinson , Kent Childress and Madison Childress, and her sister, Helen Anne Haile (Rip) of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Visitations will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at the Second Presbyterian Church, 438 N. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the church, led by The Reverend Jason Moore. Interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery, 2408 S. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
Instead of flowers, memorials can be made at the Second Presbyterian Church.
