When the new pastor of the First Congregational Church in Ramona, Rev. Wes Ellis, officially joins the church on October 17, it will be a homecoming.
Ellis, 35, his wife Amanda and two children, Henry and Bonnie, are from New Jersey, where he has served as associate pastor of First United Methodist Church in Toms River since 2016.
Originally from Ramona, Ellis is the son of Hal and Dolores Mortier. He was raised in Ramona’s First Congregational Church and graduated from Ramona High School in 2004.
“It’s a gift from God,” Acting Pastor Nerice Kaufman said. “I met him and was impressed by his depth and charisma.”
Ellis received a BA in Theology and Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific University. He returned to Ramona and was director of the church’s youth ministry until 2012 when he went to New Jersey to attend Princeton Theological Seminary. He obtained two master’s degrees, in theology and in Christian education.
In 2016, Ellis went to the University of Aberdeen in Scotland to pursue a doctorate. in practical theology. This month he received this diploma, specializing in intergenerational ministry.
“I am delighted to be able to return to the community that raised me and bring a new perspective on the faith to Ramona,” said Ellis.
