WHAT CHEER, Iowa (KYOU) – Pastor John DeBoef was just 22 when he started preaching at Hilltop Chapel on What Cheer. On Tuesday evening, members of the congregation and his family gathered to celebrate the end of an era.

When Pastor DeBoef began to minister, the church met in a downtown storefront. Eventually over time the church grew and together built a new building on Briney Street, where the church congregation now meets.

Naomi Sellers, who was married to Deboef, describes him as a kind and caring person. She and her husband were the first to get married in the new building which is now the Hilltop Chapel. “We will miss him, but we wish him all the best, he has devoted many years to us.”

Now almost 80 years old, DeBoef says it’s time to retire. “You’re getting old and you’re going to have to retire at some point, and we just felt it was about time.”

DeBoef says he will fail to help people, but plans to stay in the congregation after his travels are over. He says helping others is what he will remember the most from his time at Hilltop Chapel. “It is very rewarding to help people and overcome their difficulties. “

Pastor DeBoef says there are too many memories for him to remember at church. He still plans to make Hilltop Chapel his home.
